Effortlessly backup your entire photo collection for safekeeping. Backing up photos often is recommended to prevent losing photos due to hard drive failure or a computer virus.
Note: This tutorial requires you to have installed Preclick PhotoBack and have either a CD or DVD burner or an external hard drive installed on your computer. There is no trial of the Backup feature in Preclick PhotoBack. You can purchase the PhotoBack Backup software by clicking here.
- Make sure you have the organizer and Preclick PhotoBack installed on your computer. If you do not have organizer or Preclick PhotoBack installed, click here.
- You first need to launch organizer software.
- Launch the Backup Screen - To the left of the Help button in the organizer, you will see the PhotoBack backup icon.
Click this icon to launch the PhotoBack backup feature
- Step 1 – Select Backup Destination - If you want to backup your photos to a CD or DVD, select the first option and then select your CD/DVD burner from the drop down list. If you want to backup your photos to an external hard drive or another removable device, select the second option and then click the Browse… button to select your desired backup destination.
- Step 2 – Select Options - The options menu will display different items depending on the destination you picked in step 1.
If you chose to backup to a CD/DVD you will have the option to:
- Disc name
The default setting is the word "Photos" followed by today's date. You can edit this name by typing in the field. Note: The name is limited to 16 characters.
- Place photos in folder
Use this option to choose to put the photos into a folder on the CD or DVD rather than on the root of the disc. You can edit the folder name by typing in the field.
- Retain folder structure
Choose this option to replicate the photos' current folder structure on the CD or DVD rather than grouping all the photos together in one folder on the disc.
- Recording speed
Select from a drop down list of options for your burner.
- Leave session open to add to the disc at a later date*
If you leave the session open you can burn more photos to the disc in the future. Selecting Yes will leave the session open. Closing the disc means that you will not be able to write to the disc in the future. Note: Leaving a session open may cause the disc to not be readable by certain CD drives.
- Include CD Viewer software on disc
The CD Viewer software enables you to easily view the photos on the disc without having to install any software on your computer. This is ideal if you plan on distributing the CD or DVD. Note: The CD Viewer will only be included when burning the CD/DVD on Windows 2000 or XP.
- Include originals (if copying modified files)
When you edit photos in HP Image Zone Express, a digital negative is created of your original photos so you can always revert back to the original (unedited) photo with a single click. The original files are saved on your computer with an .orig file ending. By default, both the edited files and the original files will be backed up. (Recommended)
- Number of copies
Select the number of copies of discs you would like to burn.
Note: All your options except for the disc name and folder name will be saved for future sessions.
If you chose to backup to an external hard drive or another removable device, you will have the option to:
- Place photos in folder
Use this option to choose to put the photos into a folder on the CD or DVD rather than on the root of the disc. You can edit the folder name by typing in the field.
- Retain folder structure
Choose this option to replicate the photos' current folder structure at the destination location rather than grouping all the photos together in one folder. (Recommended) - Include originals (if copying modified files)
When you edit photos, a digital negative is created of your original photos so you can always revert back to the original (unedited) photo with a single click. The original files are saved on your computer with an .orig file ending. By default, both the edited files and the original files will be backed up. Note: This option will be saved for future sessions.
- Step 3 – Review the Backup details
The total number of photos to be backed up, amount of disc space, and the estimated time to backup the photos are displayed for review before backing up. If you are backing up photos to a CD or DVD, there will also be an entry for the number of CDs/DVDs needed for this backup session.
The blue meter represents the amount of space that the photos to be copied or burned will occupy on the destination. If you change the destination device or insert a new CD or DVD, press the Refresh button to refresh the meter.
After you have made all your selections, click the Start Backup button to begin the backup process. You will see progress bars for the backup process and the closing the disc process (if applicable).
If you need help at anytime, just click the Help button on the PhotoBack screen or click here.
